I was a paid subscriber to The Babylon Bee for a long time. While I still appreciate all that they do, the reason I gave them money was for the podcast. (Did you know they have a podcast?). It could have been a little more put together, and sometimes was painfully awkward, but it amused me and the interviews were the best part.
Turns out, maybe the interviews were only the second-best part.
Due to some unfortunate turbulence in the hive and trying some new things, the podcast went on hiatus. The Bee lost me and released two of their best cultural commentators when they assumed Ethan Nicolle and Adam Yenser were inconsequential drones when in reality they were satirical samurai. Suddenly Ethan and Adam were ribald ronan. When The Bee podcast came back without them I realized that the interviews were only part of the charm.
When Ethan and Adam started their own podcast, I realized what I really missed.
The Talk Down is a new comedy news show, basically the “What’s in the News” segment of the The Bee’s podcast stretched out over an hour. Maybe “stretched” is the wrong word, because in our current crazy climate there’s no shortage of news that’s ripe for comedy. Ethan and Adam don’t hesitate to share their opinions while riffing on the various absurdities, meaning the show never feels too scripted. It’s just two guys (and sometimes a guest) hanging out. Sometimes the news items remind them of personal stories, and show feels loose and comfortable, like an old sweatshirt.
And now the shackles are off.
The Babylon Bee has a certain audience, which means some jokes can’t be made. Ethan and Adam keep things tasteful, but they’re able to go just a little bit further. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you say things when you’re amongst friends that you would never say to coworkers. Going back to listen to The Bee’s podcast now feels like being at work or church. The Talk Down, on the other hand, is more casual. In a good way. While I have yet to sign up for the subscriber portion of this show, I fully expect more of the same.
This could have been bad.
It would have been very easy for the guys to make this show out of spite. For Ethan especially, getting let go by The Babylon Bee was painful. And while both hosts do take jabs at their former employer, who amongst us wouldn’t do the same? Thankfully, the experience didn’t break them or their funnybones. I approached The Talk Down with some trepidation that there would be “We’ll show them!” bitterness to the whole endeavor. And while there may have been some of that initially, their new show has become its own thing and they’re finally knocking the dust of Babylon from their shoes.
Maybe doing something the same, but different, is healing.
Ultimately, it’s not about them. It’s about me, darnit! And I look forward to listening in Ethan and Adam’s weekly hangouts. I rarely leave comments on YouTube videos, but I do theirs, because they feel approachable. Right now I’m pretty isolated and podcasts like this are my lifelines to the outside world, and against all odds, The Talk Down is a pretty wholesome anchor.
