Actors and other artists tend to be sensitive souls. We’re unable to simply see the world and enjoy our experiences, as our minds are forever looking for material. And while we’re working with the material, whether that be with a paintbrush, words, or cooking a meal, we’re infusing it with something of ourselves. To have it criticized or rejected, even with the best of intentions, can be hurtful to the unprepared.
Artists also have questions. “Why?” “What if?” “How could this be different?”
We’ve all seen a movie where an actor playing an actor asks, “What’s my motivation?” Back in college when I flirted with the stage (because I really wanted to flirt with actresses) I heard an actor pose that question to his director and immediately apologize. When the question “What’s my motivation?” is said aloud it tends to come across as pretentious. But for the performer, it’s something he needs to know.
Writers perform the parts of all their characters.
