At long last, if everything goes according to plan I’ll see Dune Part 2 this weekend on the biggest screen I can reasonably get to. While not a huge fan of this particular mythology, I am excited. Not only will this be my first time back in a movie theater in over a year, but I’m also anticipating the visual spectacle of the previous film. There were times during the first Dune where I felt as if the screen was holding still and I was moving. The only other time I’ve experienced that was watching the huge ships go through the Soo Locks.
We’ve seen it coming for a long time now: event movies are the only ones drawing us to the theater.
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve read and listened to all the reviews. I’ve also read the book. So I think I’ve got a pretty good grasp on the story and its themes. The primary reason I’m going to see it now and driving on extra hour to see it BIG is for the experience. Whatever the movie’s faults and shortcomings may be, this is a cultural event and one in which I want to participate. As much fun as watching it on a VR headset will inevitably be, nothing will compare to seeing it in a room full of people (I had to scramble for tickets) with a sound system that will rattle my lungs.
Not unlike a concert.
But I’m a writer and reviewer, so it can never just be about the experience. I am mentally unable to simply watch a movie and let it wash over me. My mind will be working, churning, and analyzing everything. Sometimes I wish it wasn’t so, but from my earliest days I’ve known this is how my brain is wired. Given all the information I’ve gathered, going in I’ll be looking for certain things.
Here are three (in no particular order):
