Imagine you’ve been granted enough money to build your dream house. Not being a draftsman, you hire two architects to give you some options. The first one comes to you with a Tudor style with stones, gables, arches, and lots of windows. Then your second designer shows up with a drawing reminiscent of a shipping container. Both houses have the same square footage, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, everything you could want to live comfortably.
Which would you choose?
The shipping container style home will go up faster, sure. But can you imagine coming home to that? Assume the interiors of both houses reflect the exteriors. One is purely functional. The other is functional and beautiful. Everything works. Neither house would have a leaky roof. It’s just that the house designed with care will feel more homey. Friends and family will want to visit and stay, as will you, because the beautiful home meets more than physical needs. Form and function matter.
As writers, our words can do the same. And believe it or not, remembering that is even more important here at the dawn of AI.
