I hear Taylor Swift won a football game while attending an Usher concert last night.
Or something.
But when I opened up YouTube before calling it quits for the day, I saw a bunch of new movie teasers, trailers, and spots had dropped. Oh my! So today I thought it might be fun to offer my thoughts on a few.
Twisters Super Bowl Trailer #1 (2024)
A quasi-spiritual sequel to the 1996 hit, Twister (which I mostly saw in the Sam’s Club electronics department), Twisters looks like a great commercial for Dodge trucks. Glen Powell plays a tornado wrangler, or just another variation on the smarmy jock he played so well in Top Gun: Maverick. While it looks like they’ve recaptured something of the feel of the original, the trailer hides the fact that it’s a movie with a message. Screenwriter Mark L. Smith said it’s going to “shine a light… on the causes and effects of climate change.”
Wicked Part 1 Super Bowl First Look (2024)
Years ago I tried reading Gregory Maguire’s novel and bailed almost immediately. As I recall, there was a shadow of nihilism over it which I had no desire to put myself through. After that, I lost all interest in the property and haven’t even listened to the musical. The trailer suggests that the movie adaptation (coming in two parts) will be about extending sympathy to an evil character because she overthrows the patriarchy. Next!
The Fall Guy Super Bowl Spot - Everything (2024)
It’s not all bad, though. The Fall Guy is a movie for which I’m genuinely excited. While I didn’t watch the Big Game, I’ll bet Taylor Swift was used to better effect here. Sure they poke fun at Seavers’ masculinity in a way Lee Majors’ character would never have tolerated. I accept that. But as a whole, The Fall Guy looks like it could do for action movies what Galaxy Quest did for science fiction and have some fun with the genre.
What movies are you looking forward to this year? Or what was the best Superbowl ad from last night? I heard there were a lot of aliens and UFOs.
