Yesterday was a big day in contests. We had both the announcement of the Academy Award nominees and the New Hampshire primary. Frankly, I don’t care these things anymore. And why should anyone, when all the outcomes or obvious?
Sure, there were some surprises and sources of amusement.
The Babylon Bee ran an article with the great headline “Nikki Haley Announces She Has Won The New Hampshire By Negative 12 Points.” The Oscar noms were had similarly predictable. At first I wasn’t even going to pay them any attention, but later I gave in and listened to Alan Ng call them with a decent batting average. That Barbie, along with Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, was slighted in major categories will be a source of discussion for a few weeks.
Only time will tell if such conversations were wasted time.
(Spoiler: they will be)
And yet, those invested in politics and/or entertainment can’t pull their eyes and ears away from the drama. It’s like living in a reality show. Or at least watching one with personal stakes. Yes, some people so identify with their favorite movies that Oscar outcomes are taken personally. Don’t believe me that fans can be so invested in their entertainment? Try suggesting that Taylor Swift isn’t the pinnacle of human achievement in music and let me know how that works out for you.
But why?
