It’s always nice to have something to look forward to. Many difficult months have been made bearable knowing that I pre-ordered this movie or that book and it would eventually arrive at my door. Obviously, this whole year could be dreadful. If we let it. The presidential race will only get uglier. Most new movies and TV shows will offend anyone with half a brain.
Heck, we’ll probably have a new pandemic just in time for mail-in voting.
But we don’t have to let circumstances beyond our control to hold our attention hostage.
And there are a few bright spots on the horizon, including a few movies I hope to see just as soon as I can (says the guy who pre-ordered John Wick 4 and still hasn’t watched it).
Trailers linked in titles
The Fall Guy (May 3)
Ryan Gosling goes from playing one of The Nice Guys to being The Fall Guy. Based on a TV show I’d forgotten all about, the show featured Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who tracked down bail jumpers in his spare time. After all, as a stuntman he had a “particular set of skills” that allowed him to remain cool in the face of danger. Something tells me that while the movie is sure to be fun, Gosling’s Seavers won’t be as cool as the OG.
Dune: Part 2 (March 1)
The first Dune movie in IMAX was unlike any other theater experience. There were moments of vertigo, as it seemed as if I was moving and the objects on screen were holding still. The only other time I’ve had that sensation was while watching the giant ships at the Soo Locks. If nothing else, I expect another visual feast, and if I only make it to one movie this year, I hope it’s this one.
Horizon: An American Saga - Part 1 (June 28)
Okay, I confess: I’ve never seen Dances with Wolves. But Kevin Costner’s Open Range is something I need to see again and again. The man loves westerns more than I do, so even though the most overused adjective to describe this movie will be “sprawling,” I hope it’s his masterpiece. Still, I’ll probably hold off seeing it until part two comes out later in the summer.
The Beekeeper (In theaters)
This one is already out and the buzz (sorry, not sorry) around it is fantastic. Jason Statham is our last action hero (sorry, Tom Cruise) and even the possible political themes have me ready to be amused. It’ll probably be on Amazon Prime very soon, so maybe I’ll see it sooner than later (says the guy who pre-ordered John Wick 4 and still hasn’t watched it).
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)
To be honest, I’m more interested in the conversation that will be had around this movie than actually seeing it myself. I liked Mad Max: Fury Road as much as anyone (though the same story may have been told better in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior), but the Furiosa trailer didn’t spark much enthusiasm. I’m getting a little tired of prequels and think franchises should move forward. With Mad Max, writer/director George Miller could and should move laterally, letting Max have adventures with no chronological concerns whatsoever like an old pulp hero.
So those are my top five most anticipated movies of 2024. It’ll be interesting to see what surprises us, what’s terrible, and what lasts. If you want to see my full and constantly updated list, check out my profile on Criticless.
