I’m a simple man and I like simple stories.
Some of my friends prefer Literature and Cinema, while I am perfectly satisfied with the meat and potatoes of the mediums. Sometimes I even like junk food movies. But even then, I want name brand junk food. The Fast and the Furious series is one of the most reliably entertaining franchises out there (for my taste), and definitely qualify as name brand.
Anything put out by Netflix, I’m finding, is store brand.
Store brand movies are a step up from the dollar bin movies that clutter the free streaming services. Netflix, on the other hand, can afford the same ingredients as legacy studios. Yet, for whatever reason, nearly everything they make comes out generic and bland. For every Extraction 2 (which is legit good) we get a Heart of Stone (which I’ve watched and completely forgotten).
Now we have Lift.
The first review I heard about Lift described it as a Kevin Hart led, Fast and Furious style, heist movie. So far, so good. It was directed by F. Gary Gray, who gave us The Italian Job remake (good!) and The Fate of the Furious (not-so-good!). Perhaps foolishly, I hoped that working outside of an established franchise would give him the opportunity to give me some fresh entertainment.
But Netflix strikes again!
