Late last week Amazon gave us the first three episodes of Reacher season two, and many fans of the first season approached with caution. That is the best way to approach a six foot four, 240lb, no-nonsense, former military cop. Especially when his favorite fighting move is a headbutt.
Ouch.
That the show was ever allowed to be unapologetically masculine in today’s political climate is still something of a mystery. Amazon likely lost millions, if not billions, of dollars woke-ifying The Lord of the Rings after all. Reacher is a descendant of Conan the Barbarian, the ruthless wanderer who crushes evil, beds the priestess, and moves on to his next adventure.
How could that escape snarky commentary?
Well, so far in second season Reacher seems to have done so. This time he’s surrounded by the surviving members of his former special investigation team, two women and one man. If ever there was opportunity to celebrate some girl power by putting the big man in his place, the writers had one. But the story wouldn’t work, nor would the show retain its audience, if they disrespected the hero.
