Do you remember the Blue Sky era?
From 2005 to 2016 the USA Network declared “Characters Welcome,” offering a sunny haven from the gloomy prestige TV filling the other network schedules. While Walter White and Raylan Givens were busy being anti-heroes, Adrian Monk and Shawn Spencer, while not exactly heroic, were, well, characters. The formula proved winning, and soon USA had an entire slate of similar shows.
Remember these?
Burn Notice, White Collar, Royal Pains, Covert Affairs, and Suits all proved successful. People are still watching them today. Last week Mr. Monk came out of retirement for one last case.(you can read my thoughts on that over at Criticless) and just days before that Deadline announced that USA is looking to revive their once signature style. Given the renewed (if inexplicable) interest in Suits, it only makes sense.
We need feel good TV.
Before gritty dramas took over, we had fun shows where the stakes were just high enough to thrill, the endings left us smiling, and we could go to bed with gleeful anticipation for the next episode. There were through-lines, of course, but for the most part the Blue Sky shows didn’t require the commitment of a long, drawn-out, episodic movie. Show your friends your favorite episode, or catch a rerun on a lazy day, and everything needed for a good time is right there.
TV was always supposed to be easy.
