I’ve been a begrudging fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series for years now. One day, early in my career as a shelver at a public library, I had One Shot on my cart Fearing that the upcoming Tom Cruise movie would generate interest, I hid the book until I could come back later and check it out for myself. Not, perhaps, my finest moment. Later that afternoon, I returned to my apartment and started reading.
It’s a darn good book.
Hooked, I started getting Reacher audiobooks to listen to while I worked, and read a few more on the side. At the time I didn’t track my reading, and between consuming the books quickly, burning through them out of order, and the fact that some are more memorable than others, I have no idea which ones I’ve read and which I haven’t.
After a certain point, every time I finished one I said I wouldn’t read another.
But then I’d see Lee Child’s name on the spine at some used bookstore and add it to my collection. Now I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll inevitably collect and read the entire series. The first Tom Cruise movie isn’t bad, but the only redeeming quality of the second is Lee Child’s cameo as a security guard who doesn’t recognize Reacher.
Jack is a large man. Tom is not.
So when it was announced that Amazon was adapting the first novel, Killing Floor,as a TV series, and had cast Alan Ritchson, an actor more like Reacher both in stature and biography, I was as excited as anyone. I quickly reread the novel to prepare and was pleasantly surprised with the show. It’s adult, to be sure, but at least they toned down some of the more gruesome elements of the story.
Imagine that.
Next week Reacher season 2 is getting released. Despite the fact that Ritchson has said some vile things about people of my political persuasion, I can accept that he’s another idiot actor. Maybe the steroids have reduced his capacity for intelligent thought and empathy. At any rate, the first season isn’t woke. Hopefully the DEI demons haven’t bedeviled the follow-up.
