While most people are back to living their normal lives with work, church, social gatherings, and other obligations that take them out of the house and into a world filled with people to talk to, I don’t have that right now. Sometimes that’s difficult, I admit, but I don’t say this for sympathy. This chapter of my life is a calling, it won’t last forever, and someday I’ll look back on it and be thankful.
Nevertheless, I miss people.
I used to be pretty witty and glib, and watching Moonlighting or Psych reminds me how much those communication muscles have atrophied. Ah well, it is what it is. At least I have those shows to remind me how it’s done, and my own fiction writing for creating some banter. The point is, words are music to me. I need speech the way most people need melody and everyone needs oxygen.
It’s why I listen to so many podcasts.
Lately I’ve been enjoying more livestream shows whenever I can. Let’s be honest, even at my most charismatic, I was always happier sitting back and listening to the crowd. Having the voices plugged directly into my ears isn’t as healthy or satisfying as being in the same room, but it’s better than nothing. So without further adieu, here are a few of my current favorites.
Pop Culture Crisis
Every weekday from 3pm-5pm Brett and Mary chat about what’s going on in popular culture. For a couple bucks, they’ll even read your comment. At first I wondered why I was there, because sometimes their media literacy isn’t as broad as mine. However, I appreciate Brett’s encyclopedic knowledge of 90’s and early 00’s prime time TV and film, even if I don’t always agree with his opinions. Mary has a gentle and amusing snark, with common sense and a moral core that gives me hope.
Film Threat
This one is a little more difficult to catch live, but I always listen later. Michigan native and firebrand Chris Gore has been talking about movies for a long time. Dude knows his stuff. Cohost Alan Ng doesn’t rant like Chris, but provides rational analysis of movies and the industry. While they spend a fair amount of time talking about the big studio films, they always shift focus back to smaller movies that aren’t on most people’s radars. Sure it gets crass, but this is a time where it’s okay to say boys will be boys.
Salty Nerd Podcast
Salty Nerd is the newest in my playlist, so I’m still learning the hosts and format. It’s another show that discusses movies, television, and the industry at large. Their opinions are usually radically different from what I hear on Film Threat, and it’s nice to have an alternate perspective on things, even if I doubt I'll watch most of them. Also fun, sometimes Brett from Pop Culture Crisis or Chris Gore from Film Threat are guests. Blaine Andrews from Criticless also pops in from time to time.
So if, like me, you enjoy listening to people who talk about movies, be sure to subscribe to their channels. I know they’d appreciate it. And maybe I’ll see you in the chat.
