This week has had its kind of mayhem.
Sunday we weren’t able to go to my grandmother’s 99th birthday party because of car trouble. However, I’m not sure we would have gone anyway. On Saturday I woke up very early and worked hard outside all afternoon, so I was still catching up. Mom must have caught my tired because she slept all Sunday afternoon, which is very unusual. I rewatched The Silence of the Lambs for the first time in many years. Ironically, the episode of Murder, She Wrote I watched in the evening came out the same week.
Synchronicity
On Monday I woke up with a dry throat and a general sense of fuzziness. Something told me to listen to my body and not do a workout, lest I get sick. After I’d been up for a couple hours I felt better, so I took a couple of walks around the neighborhood. A rest day doesn’t mean an inactive day. That evening we had our last CSA farm share pickup for the season. I’ll miss our weekly vegetable outings, but we’re all signed up for next year.
Now, what do I do with a celery root?
Tuesday morning I had a fantastic workout. I also spent a good amount of time reading The Mysterious Case Rudolf Diesel, the latest nonfiction from Doug Brunt. If you’re looking for a great Christmas gift for a dad who loves science and history, you couldn’t do any better. I'm not a dad and I don’t love science, but all the moving parts of world history have me as engaged with the story as any novel.
This was also the day we got our first real snow.
Wednesday morning I finally got my car into the service center. It was a winter wonderland drive, too. I was able to get a ride home thanks to an assist from a family I met in DeWitt when I worked in the coffee shop. They moved up here shortly before we did, and it’s funny how God provides. By late afternoon the repair shop thought the necessary repairs had been made, but asked to keep it overnight to finish a recall repair. Then I got a call yesterday saying that no, the wrench light was back.
Maybe it’ll be finished today.
Thursday I had another great training session. Because I took Monday off and knew Wednesday would be unusual, this week I stepped away from my current program to do pretty much whatever I want. As long as I did something. This freedom has been refreshing and I’ve still made progress. Later in the day I played Tomb Raider on my PS4 for a bit. Video games give me a respite from all the reading, writing, cooking, and training that usually fill my days.
All things in moderation.
What’s cooking, you ask? My current, favorite thing is beef shanks. As the name implies, this cut of meat comes from the cow’s upper leg and therefore tends to be very tough. I’ve found the best way to prepare it is to heavily season the meat with corse salt for a few hours before rinsing and patting it dry. Then I saute it for a few minutes on each side, add some broth, and pressure cook it in the Instant Pot for 40 minutes and let it naturally release. The shanks come out with a nice chew and excellent flavor.
Finally…
If you’re looking for something to look forward to, check out this trailer for The Fall Guy, an upcoming action movie based on the most awesome 80s TV series the whole world forgot. Ryan Gosling is proof that being one of The Nice Guys means you'll inevitably become The Fall Guy. Poor guy. Anyway, I’m going to go back and watch some episodes of the original while I wait for the movie to become available to me.
Have a great week, everyone! And remember, using any of the Amazon links gives me a small kickback.
