We've probably reached a point in my reviews of The Ark where I can no longer avoid spoilers. So if you haven’t started watching yet (and really, why haven’t you?) and you don’t want to be surprised, you shouldn’t read any further.
Because, in some ways, I was surprised.
All along I’ve said that The Ark is delightfully predictable. The ebb and flow of various plot threads is obvious to anyone who knows how to find them, which never bothered me. But last week I said that I hoped the writers would eventually throw me for a loop, and with “A Slow Death is Worse,” some loops are thrown. Thankfully, everything that happens remains true to the spirit and themes which have already been established.
They don’t cheat.
At the end of last week’s episode our crew on Ark 1 thought they’d found a planet with fuel, but when they arrived they discovered their sensors were actually reading another Ark’s fuel. The big cliffhanger was the discovery of Ark 3 (where’s Ark 2? We’ll come back to that). Now we pick up with their attempting to contact Ark 3 and receiving no answer. Maybe they’re all in cryosleep. Maybe they’re all dead. Brice is gungho on leading the landing party and Garnet agrees, although she’s still too injured to go along.
Bad news: everyone on Ark 3 is dead.
Worse news: Felix finds his husband among them.
Ark 3’s sole survivor, an engineer trainee named Kelly who only has limited information, explains that after Ark 1 left Evelynn Maggs, the successor of William Trust (rhymes with Elon Musk) the mad genius who developed the Ark program, figured out faster than light (FTL) travel. That’s how Ark 3 was able to pass them. Unfortunately, Ark 2 was vaporized when the FTL malfunctioned. Alicia gets it and breaks it down so everyone can understand: “The details don’t matter, just know that it’s brilliant.”
Got it.
Kelly also tells them that Earth was in bad shape when she left, and that the people on Ark 1 are probably all that’s left of humanity. But Kelly herself doesn’t seem trustworthy. So while I predicted new characters with the discovery of another ship, something tells me she won’t be around very long. I also predicted that sparks would fly between Brice and Eva, and when they think they’re about to die while hijacking the FTL drive and Ark 3 goes into self-destruct mode, they nearly kiss. I didn’t expect such an emotional arc for Felix, and frankly I don’t want it.
Let the tough head of security be tough. I don’t care that he’s gay.
The biggest surprises were yet to come. This show is burning through plot like a house on fire, huh? When Ark 3 is in countdown and only a high level security code will shut it off, what does Lane do? He runs to the secret chamber and wakes up William Trust. DUN, DUN, DUNNNNNN! And what do Angus and Alicia find on Ark 3’s external video archive? That Ark 3 (and presumably Ark 1) was attacked by…. Wait for it….
Ark 15
Obviously, this episode broke with the format just a bit and it was quite refreshing. Maybe that was the biggest, most pleasant loop thrown my way. We’re a little more than halfway through the season and I’m relieved to see that everything has been planned out. There hasn’t been any announcement about a second season, but if the show continues building momentum I hope that it can also build a following.
For a taste of the plot, characters, and humor of the show, here's a little clip from the latest episode:
