Last week I mentioned that I’ve gotten hooked on the Men’s Health Gym & Fridge videos. Since I’m neither a professional athlete nor celebrity (much less fitness icon), the odds of them interviewing me seems pretty slim. But at the end of every video they ask a series of rapidfire questions, and I thought it might be fun to share my answers with you. Since this is written, I’ll give expanded answers.
Workout time - 7am or 7pm
If I’m in my training space by 7am it’s gonna be a good day. Generally I’m not going quite that early (especially now that the sunrise is later), but I like morning sessions. I have yet to see a Men’s Health video where any of the celebs say otherwise, so I guess I’m in good company.
Squat or Deadlift?
Even though I just have dumbbells, I’ve experimented with both and have to say squats. I just don’t have the flexibility in my hamstrings for deadlifts and tend to mess up my back when I try. Maybe someday that will change. In the meantime, today I did 110 squats with two 20lb dumbbells.
Favorite Song on Your Playlist?
No surprise, I don’t listen to music while I train. There are just too many podcasts and audiobooks I enjoy, and music doesn’t pump me up like it does some people. Training can be boring, so I’ll take anything I can to engage my mind and imagination while putting in the work.
Crossfit - Yay or Nay
I’ve never tried Crossfit, and I don’t intend to. Looks like a fancy way of getting hurt. That said, I like watching other people do it well. Games don’t motivate me. I’d rather have form and function over points, so I don’t think it would help me.
Pull-ups or Chin-ups?
I like chin-ups better because I can do more of them. Right now I can’t get to my pull-up bar out in the frigid garage anyway, so I’m doing rows. Lots and lots of rows. It’ll be interesting to see how pull-ups go once I can get back out there after working my back in other ways.
Dumbbells or Kettlebells?
Right now the majority of my weight training is with dumbbells. It’s only been in the last couple of months that I’ve been able to do kettlebell swings without hurting myself, and now that I can I do 100 a couple times a week with a light weight. If I ever had to give up calisthenics and start over, kettlebells is what I would choose. Hopefully someday I can learn more.
Run on the Treadmill or the Great Outdoors?
I’d much rather walk outside and run inside. The treadmill isn’t as hard on the knees and I feel safer plugging into a podcast when I don’t need to worry about traffic and other people.
If You Could Workout with Anyone, Dead or Alive, Who Would it Be?
The Bioneer, of course! I like his philosophy, and Adam seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Anyway, that’s all for today. Thanks for reading and subscribing. Maybe someday I’ll talk about my refrigerator, but not until spring when it looks especially nice with lots of fresh food and I can post pictures.
