Yesterday Breitbart reported that Hollywood lost more than $500 billion in market value this year. Disney and Paramount saw their value drop 40%. Netflix lost subscribers and their stock value drop 50%. Warner Brothers got hit the hardest with a 60% loss. Naturally, the comments are filled with replies like, “Let’s see if we can double that next year,” “Am I not supposed to be happy about this?” and of course, “Go woke, go broke.” Is it time to get out the party streamers?
I don’t think so.
For one thing, I suspect that Hollywoke will realize they pushed the envelope too far, too fast, and will course correct. We’re already seeing it with films like Top Gun: Maverick and shows like Yellowstone, which if nothing else are more subtle in their messaging. It will be a tactical retreat and in a few years they’ll try again. And next time they won’t encounter as much resistance if they’re allowed to do so.
They’re playing the long game, and the other side is looking for quick wins.
Second, what happens if the commenters’ dreams come true and the whole industry goes belly-up? Consider that for a long time America, the birthplace of the modern film industry, set the tone for the global pop culture. We had a head start on the rest of the world, so in places where there were no movies being made they watched ours. They didn’t completely absorb our ideas and values, but they the influence was potent.
We stop telling our stories our way and stories from somewhere else will fill the void.
In 2012 something changed. Rian Johnson’s Looper was made in partnership with China and suddenly all our blockbusters were being made for a global audience. The next year additional scenes were added to the international cut of Iron Man 3 to make another country look better. Let’s not forget The Interview from 2014, which many thought would spark the next World War. Making movies for everyone meant that movies weren’t being made for anyone.
I miss the 90’s.
Should Hollywood collapse, who will supply our entertainment and influence our culture? Whose values will pumped into our heads through story? No one can tell our stories like we can, our values have value, and without a storytelling machine to remind us who we are and what we aspire to, we will cease to exist. If that’s what you want, celebrate. If it’s not, take note. Because conservative media like The Daily Wire is woefully unprepared to fill the void.
There is a way forward.
We have to go back to the grassroots. We have to start paying attention to the stories and art being made by people like us, our neighbors, and our neighbors in spirit. Our country started in coffee houses, livingrooms, and with no-name writers from no-name towns, writing for pulp magazines. It’s how we’ve always been, and the old ways are usually the best ways.
