Early this morning Elon Musk asked the age old question, “What is best in life?” As we approach Thanksgiving and the holiday season it’s worth serious consideration. I mean, Conan the Barbarian was probably onto something. It’s just that most of us don’t have enemies to crush or drive before us. And as for the lamentation of their women? Well, as Matt Walsh has recently discovered, in today’s society figuring out what is woman is up for debate.
So much debate.
What is best in our lives? Hopefully tomorrow I’ll crush a great meal, have a safe drive, and avoid lamentations. But perhaps the best thing in life is community. This is the loneliest time of year for people who lack it, which only emphasizes its importance. Isolation is hell on earth. Community is a taste of heaven. Speaking of taste, it’s worth noting how we connect with friends and family over food, and reunification with God is described as a wedding feast.
Bring on the food!
There have been seasons of life where I’ve had community, and there have been seasons when I’ve longed for it. When I worked at the coffee shop I never asked people about their holiday plans because I understood that not everyone is fortunate enough to have any. I’ve been there. Sometimes I’d ask to work on holidays, just to make the day different, special. Those are actually some good memories, so I didn’t begrudge the work.
Or the holiday pay.
But if you are fortunate enough to have people in your life who care about you, don’t neglect them this holiday season. They won’t always be there, so you’ll want those memories to hold onto later. And if the best you can do is to pick up some extra hours at work, that’s okay. We all recognize holidays in our own way, whether we want to or not, as best as we can.
