Tomorrow will be a little hectic (today is looking bad enough), so I apologize if I don't get out a post tomorrow. Especially after taking Monday off. But have no fear! For the rest of the foreseeable future these daily essays should return with some regularity.
BasedCon II is this weekend, and I've been looking forward to this since I got home from the last one. I met in person many people with whom I'd only interacted with online and I made many new friends. This year's con is looking bigger and better than ever. Thanks to all of my food pictures (I assume), when I volunteered to help they put me in the kitchen.
I'll feel right at home.
What is BasedCon, you ask? It's the annual gathering of not-woke science-fiction and fantasy writers and fans. It's actually quite apolitical and draws people from all walks of life and beliefs. Atheists, agnostics, and Christians talk (sometimes with great passion) about things they love. But respectfully, with joy. There's good food, good panel discussions, and games.
For some of us, it's better than home.
Something I really appreciated last year was that, for all the doom-casting going on the world, there are still people devoted to telling great stories. It was refreshing. It's still inspiring. On the days when it looks like evil is winning and society as we know it is falling apart, just knowing that there are artists determined to keep doing what they were created to do gives me hope.
If you're reading this and planning to attend, I can't wait to see you! Also, if you become a paid subscriber here, I'll give you a free book.
