While I’d never claim to be a sociologist, as a storyteller I can’t help but observe humanity and culture. Not only do I need to create realistic characters, I also have to connect with any potential audience. However, I don’t just want to sell my work. Some people might say they want to shift the culture, which sounds a little mercenary. “Shift the culture” can sometimes be taken to mean, “Give my people more power and reap the financial benefits.”
I want to inspire.
So I have to ask myself what I want to inspire. Good things, of course. And don’t give me any of that, “What you think is good for you might not be good for someone else” nonsense. We know the difference. Anyone can see that we're living in a failing society and remember when things were better. We remember, or see through history, the values that were held commonplace during the better times.
What changed? The stories we tell ourselves.
The sociologists tell us that Americans are unhappy and Gen Z doesn’t want to date or see romance in movies. Our young people (gosh, I sound old) aren’t drinking, or socializing in person, or getting in trouble. We’ve got social media influencers like Pearl pointing out the dangers of relationships to discourage them. [Side note: my take on Pearl is that if she’s being honest and not just content farming, she wants people to be safe. Sorry Pearl. No risk, no reward]. Now that depressants like weed are legal, they don’t even have to connect with the local drug dealer in a sketchy location to get their mellowing agents. I don’t have any problem with video games, but anything can be used or misused as a drug to numb a deeper pain, and endless hours of roaming and shooting can do just that.
Not to mention the social messaging that’s being more aggressively seeded into the the games.
And let’s talk about passive media, so readily provided by Netflix and the like. Forget whatever political and social agendas mainstream film might push and think about the content itself. Does it inspire us to go on adventures, fall in love, and embrace self-sacrifice? Not like it used to.
If we remember it at all.
